the Friend you want in others
What is being mature?
What is "grown-up" about?
Will I be more mature
When I can work it out?
From Naieve to the cynic;
The start and the end?
Is this adulthood's path;
Does this road have a bend?
If one stays naieve
And yet is quite well read;
Is one considered childish,
Not so serious, totally,.... led?
What reflects adulthood?
Is it the choices adults make?
Do we visit the same crossroads
In the life-paths that we take?
When we try to make good choices
Based on research, not on fate;
Can we factor hope and trusting
In our final estimate?
Ah, but no, says loud the cynic
Trust in others dooms the plan;
Blinds the reasoning, flaws the outcome
Don't rely on word of man.
No, but we all need each other;
Shoulders upon which to lean?
I can't believe that all are devious
That every person is so,...... mean!?
Look, theres more to being grown-up
It's all about YOU, and The Rest
You must try to make your life work,
It's all up to what's your 'best.'
Children need much reassurance
Need a parent's guiding hand;
But a man must face the music
By himself, alone should stand.
Other's lives are not your problem
They're The Rest, leave them alone.
They won't be there when you need them
In the end you pay alone.
Men are like the grass in winter
Green and lush they stay nearby;
But when the summers heat gets stronger
They wither up and dry, and die.
You're naieve to trust in others
When they'll let you down, you'll cry;
But when you have too much on offer
Then they'll keep on coming by.
Yes, but surely my friends love me?
They come for me, through sun or rain?
Should I become quite poor or sickly,
They'll be there again, again!?
Ah naieve one, simply trusting
Believing every promise, true;
Does it really make you happy
Thinking that they 'care' for you?
In this world so fast and changing
People look for number one;
You can only be but second
If you pace them while they run!
No I can't believe that trusting others
Is so foolish. Not for all?;
What if one friend is quite different
In this catergory does not fall?
Then I will be this one and only
True my motives are clear to me;
I will be true, AND trustworthy,
And let my friends rely on me!
Little one, keep on then, growing
Hoping that a Friend you'll be;
That by the time you reach adulthood
This view that I have you won't see.
First though, advice: To find yourself first
Prove that you can rely on YOU;
Then you can surely make the promise
That other friends can trust you too.
Be the friend you want in others
Forgive and their faults, do not see;
I hope that your wish, for your living
Stands up to reality.
Reality is like the weather
And you are like a new grown tree;
If you can stand through changing seasons
Then, perhaps, mature you'll be.
