All child vaccines hit by backlash
- Take-up rates of all childhood vaccines fell as a result of fears
raised over a possible link between autism and the MMR jab, the country's
leading expert said yesterday. Dr Richard Roberts, who leads the
immunisation programme across Wales, said the fears raised about MMR had a
knock-on effect on confidence in other vaccines; and immunisation rates at
age one for illnesses like diphtheria, tetanus, polio, meningitis C and
haemophilus influenzae type B fell because of concerns about MMR, by

Bush Administration Knew - Childhood Vaccines Cause Autism
- Vaccines are the only drugs that American children are
mandated to receive. Although it may be true that vaccines are mandated by
state governments, the decision to mandate a vaccine is based on the
recommendations of Federal advisory committees. In the interest of public
safety, Congress has a duty to ensure that advisory committee members
involved in vaccine policymaking are not improperly influenced by
conflicts of interest. In recent years, public trust in the Federal
policymaking related to vaccines causing Autism, has been broken by the
practice of ignoring obvious conflicts of interest. At this point,
immediate action by Congress is necessary to restore public confidence in
the safety of childhood vaccinations. Is There A Link Between Childhood
Vaccines And Autism? Is there a connection? I'll let readers judge for
themselves. By Evelyn Pringle |

Even with triumphs, vaccinations are vital - It's only one of about
two dozen vaccination doses most children receive by the time they are 6
years old. But it was one of the most visible efforts to eradicate a
disease from the United States. This year marks the 50th anniversary of
the approval of the Salk vaccine that helped eliminate polio from America.
The goal is for global eradication by the end of this year. And although
many of the other diseases children are vaccinated for also are rare
today, it's important to continue the immunizations, health officials
said. ''The major challenge is when people have the idea the disease is
gone and will stop vaccinating,'' said Dr. Christopher Kus, a pediatric
director of the state Department of Health's Division of Family Health. By

No Evidence for Link between Vaccines and Autism / Improved awareness and diagnostic changes more likely to blame for
increased diagnoses - An increase in the diagnosis of autism over the past
20 years is more likely due to improved awareness, diagnostic changes and
availability of services rather than environmental factors or immunizations,
suggests a new study. "This study is the first to measure the incidence—the
occurrence of new cases—of autism by applying consistent, contemporary
criteria for autism to a specific population over a long period of time,"
says study coauthor William Barbaresi of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota, USA. "In doing so, the study accounts for improvements in the
diagnostic criteria for autism, the medical community's improved
understanding of this disease and changes in federal special education
laws.," by Betterhumans Staff |

No Link Found Between Vaccines and Autism - There is no link between
autism and immunizations, says a Mayo Clinic study in the January issue of
the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. Over the past two
decades there have been suggestions about a possible connection between
increasing rates of autism and immunization. However, this study found
no such link and suggests that the increase in autism may be due to a number
of factors. These include improved awareness about autism, changes in
diagnostic criteria and availability of services for children with autism,

Officials fear parent revolt over new baby vaccine
- Health officials are preparing to add another jab to the national baby
immunisation programme which already sees infants given two injections
containing six vaccinations by the age of four months. Government advisers
have given their support in principle to a vaccination against bacterial
meningitis, septicaemia and pneumonia, infections which strike about 550
under-fives in England and Wales each year and may kill between 50 and 100,

Parent against vaccination - Karen Palmer’s three children will
not join Mid Canterbury youngsters lining up for a jab to protect against
meningococcal B when the vaccination programme begins in June. Free
immunisation programmes and aggressive outreach efforts have virtually
ensured that all children can be protected against childhood diseases such
as measles, mumps, chickenpox and now meningitis. But some parents believe
that the vaccines are more dangerous than the diseases they are designed
to prevent. By Jared Morgan |

Parents claim MMR research is flawed - "Parents in Norwich have reacted
angrily to the latest round of research which concluded there was no link
between the controversial MMR jab and autism in children. The debate
over the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine and the development of autism
and bowel problems reached new heights this week when the Medical Research
Council said there was no evidence the two were related. |
