Here's What's Up

ASA Safe & Sound
I want to thank and congratulate ASA for their fantastic NEW Safe and Sound initiative! Visit the ASA web site http://www.autism-society.org and type in Safe and Sound at the search engine. I'm again and always honored to contribute an article to ASA's Advocate! Look for a new one in the next issue!

Autism Spectrum Quarterly
The next issue of Autism Spectrum Quarterly will feature Criminal Justice and the Autism Response Team  that I co-wrote with Matt Brown, an autism dad and U.S. Probation Officer from Maine. Please visit the ASQ web site

New Book for Teachers and Parents
"First Responders:
Parent Teacher Education Resource"
by Jacquelyn Sullivan, Mo.M

The Parent Teacher Education Resource is comprised of 76 reproducible pages. All of the cut and paste activities and story-boards contain Mayer-Johnson standard icons and/or real life original photographs.

The text is an easy to read approach for teaching emergency and safety preparedness to individuals with developmental disabilities. The activities are especially geared towards those with limited verbal ability and on the Autism Spectrum.

This is a wonderful new book/resource for teaching children risk and safety life skills! I had the chance to meet and chat with nice, creative and down-to-earth Jacky last fall in Massachusetts. She's developed an extremely valuable tool for parents and educators and, especially, our children. Email her directly from her web page.

New Book New Chapter!

Coming Out Asperger: Diagnosis, Disclosure and Self-Confidence
Edited by Dinah Murray
2005

Dinah Murray has a PhD in linguistics, which has led to her keen interest in autism for over a decade. She is currently a tutor for Birmingham University's distance learning course in autism, has published widely about autism both in Britain and abroad.

I was happy to work with Dinah and contribute a chapter for this new Jessica Kingsley Publishers book. It's a key issue for many on the spectrum. This book is loaded with good advice for those who are taking a first or second look at disclosure. Check it out!!

Autism Society of Oregon Partners with Portland Police Bureau
Autism Society of Oregon (ASO) volunteers have been presenting autism information weekly to Portland's finest since last September. Give double high fives to ASO and PPB Chief Foxworthy!! P.S. The program has expanded to the Salem PD!!

ALEC Approved for Massachsetts Fire Fighter Training
From Bill Cannata ALEC Coordinator:

"The Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition has been approved by the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy to train recruit firefighters for autism awareness.  In 2006, 288 new firefighters will be trained  before they are assigned to duty in stations throughout the state. The program will discuss autism and the best approach methods during an emergency situation, rescue situations, patient handling and the Dennis  Debbaudt video.   This is the first academy that ALEC has been added to the curriculum. Our goal is to be in all of the police and fire academies statewide."

"We each have our own way of living in the world, together we are like a symphony.
Some are the melody, some are the rhythm, some are the harmony
It all blends together, we are like a symphony, and each part is crucial.
We all contribute to the song of life."
...Sondra Williams

We might not always agree; but TOGETHER we will make a difference.
